This provides the highest quality water in constant supply, its simple water is forced through a semi-permeable membrane which rejects all unwanted impurities. The membrane will only allow pure water molecules to flow through, resulting in all contaminants including bacteria, chemicals and heavy metals being removed and flushed to waste.
If a solution of salts in water is separated from a source of pure water by a semi-permeable membrane, the tendency of the pure water is to pass through the membrane to try and dilute the salt solution which forces pure water through the membrane, thereby concentrating the salt solution.
The effect is utilized in Reverse Osmosis plant to allow water containing a high level of natural salts to be purified without the need for chemical regenerants (such as acids and caustic). Therefore Reverse Osmosis is a much safer route of producing pure water for many commercial and industrial applications, where chemical handling is a problem. Additionally the plant does not need to be taken out of service to regenerate as a demin plant would, ensuring continuous water availability. Typically uses include plating, glass wash, chemical manufacture, electronics and high pressure boilers.
The proportion of pure water produced from the feed is known as the recovery rate, and will vary from 15-85% depending upon the type of water being treated. Typically, with UK mains water, a recovery rate of 66-75% can be achieved. As water should be softened and dechlorinated before being passed to the membrane, the reject water (which is still soft) can be used for any application where soft water is required such as wash water, grey water for toilet flush, or in some cases cooling tower make up.

Plant must be supplied with softened water, and a duplex unit is recommended for continuous operation. High output reverse osmosis plant offers considerable advantages over traditionally deionization systems, with no acid/caustic consumables nor problems with COSHH compliance.
